Learn The Five
Simple Steps to Better
Communication, Behavior, and Relationships For
You and Your Child
Day of Change:A
Groundbreaking Workshop for Parents of Children with Autism and Other
Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Grand
Rapids, MI • March 13, 2010
9:00am-5:00pm Registration from 8:30am-9:00am
If
you are like many parents of children with autism and related
neurodevelopmental disorders, you face the ongoing frustration of
trying to effectively communicate and relate to your child in ways that
help them engage with you and others. So many parents tell me they are
tired of sounding like a broken record in their attempts to elicit some
kind of communication from their child, or they are tired of bending
over backwards to try to engage their child with little to show for it.
Behaviors can seem like a never-ending battle that exhausts you and
your child.
During
this Day of Change we will show you five simple but powerful concepts
to help you permanently impact your child’s communication,
behavior, and relationships for the better. You will learn how to
change aspects of yourself and your style of communicating and relating
in order to change the way your child responds to you and the world
around him/her. By the end of our day together you will learn:
- Simple
communication changes you can make that will dramatically alter the way
your child listens, understands, and responds
- How
to end your child’s repetitive questions and/or scripting by
simply changing your own behavior and communication
- The
two very clear messages you must send to your child in order to foster
engagement and improve behavior
- How
your emotions impact your child’s ability to communicate and
relate with you
- The
importance of slowing down in order to speed up your child’s
progress
- Secrets
to simplifying any task or activity in order to reduce frustration and
increase success
The
five key concepts covered will provide you with a guide in any
situation you may encounter with your child. A combination of lecture,
video examples, and hands-on activities will ensure you understand not
only the concepts involved but know how to go home and apply them. You
will leave at the end of the day with changed thinking, changed
emotions, and changed actions in relation to your children.
If you are the parent, adult family member, or other primary caregiver
of a child of any
age who has autism or another neurodevelopmental
disorder, then this workshop is for you. Whether your child is a
toddler or a teenager you will gain information and strategies to
transform your child’s communication, behavior, and
relationships.Couples are encouraged to attend together so you can
both benefit from the information and leave on the same page.
"I've been living with my son with autism for 15 years and thought I was doing everything I could possibly be doing right - until I attended your seminar. It was incredibly enlightening in so many ways, and completely changed the way I think about children living with autism.
I loved it! I cannot say enough about how enlightening this entire seminar was. It was well thought out, full of incredible information and concrete ideas to take home to implement, and gave me a much deeper understanding of how and why children with autism operate as they do. This information needs to be shouted from the mountaintops, and I recommend Horizons seminars to parents and educators. Awesome - thanks!"
—Donna Goyette, Parent and Teacher
"As grandparents of a 5-year-old boy with autism, we wanted to become more knowledgeable about the RDI® treatment program our daughter and her husband are involved with at Horizons. We spend a lot of time with our grandson, and want to make sure we were on the "same page" as his parents in our interactions with him. My daughter suggested we attend the “Day of Change” workshop that Horizons was having, and it turned out to be very enlightening. The information we gained has helped us communicate more effectively with our grandson by changing the way we use our verbal and nonverbal communication. We have learned to get down physically on his level and communicate with fewer words, and he really seems to respond to this with more eye contact and understanding. We also enjoyed talking to other participants at the workshop and hearing about their experiences living with children with autism. I would definitely recommend this workshop for parents and extended family members of children with autism."
—Nancy Thomas, Grandparent
"For four years, my husband and I searched the Internet, polled friends, asked the school systems, read several books and poured over countless magazine articles trying to find answers to help us deal with our son's Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have tried many different techniques and solutions. Some of them worked to a degree and some not at all. I think we have finally found the solution. When my husband and I attended the parents event, it didn't take long to realize that what Horizons professionals teach just makes sense.
What a feeling of relief and hope - I can make a difference in my child’s life!
It seems like today there are many people that claim to “have a cure” for autism, it is hard to know what works and what doesn't. With so many options, where is a family supposed to turn for help? For my family, our answers were found at Horizons DRC."
